Hello!
It's nearly 5pm... today I did a walking tour of Berlin! This city isn't even that old... I mean, compared to many of the scandinavian cities... and estonia etc. But there's so much history!! I think the parts I'm most moved by are peoples fights for freedom against oppression... well... more like fights for freedom I guess... We learnt about the old Prussian empire with it's crazy kings, about the weimar republic (for only a little bit! Germany has been a democracy for less time than Australia!), the world wars and the nazi's, the cold war and berlin wall etc. It's actually really interesting why the wall was built! But it's quite a long story so might not type it here now... And like I say, the story of the wall coming down is really moving! Power to the people :-)
Tonight... going to grab some (hopefully) traditional German food, then head out to a nightspot somewhere. Tomorrow there's quite a few museums that are supposed to have kewl old-world artifacts - and the price for one museum includes 2 others! Time to be museumed-out... especially since much of that type of stuff that I wanted to see in Vienna was closed!
Okay... not too much to say... ohh except that I'm in the most-ever-reccommended-hostel. And so far it's living up to it's many reccommendations! Still haven't checked out the in-house pub!
Adios Amigos!
Posted by Sam at November 07, 2002 11:54 PMG'Day Sam, We met a bloke in Computer Net at Marion yesterday. When we told him you were backpacking around and going to Berlin he said he did that a few years ago but when they got to Berlin they were not let in. It appears that the year before at the Octoberfest they had run out of beer and some Aust. Yobboes had trashed the place. Its good to see that they let you in.
We enjoyed the photos. I have stored them in the Sony Picture Gear. Keep up the good reporting. Gran sends her love. By the way its the Chrismas Pageant tomorrow. Love your old Pa
