Hello from Munich!
It's pretty kewl here! I've been here since Thurs arvo... the trip from Salzburg was good... gee Western European trains are nice! I still haven't started using my eurail pass either! It's so close from Salzburg to Munich that I thought it would waste the money on the pass... And... I still don't know where I'm going next... I mean... I'm leaving tomorrow for somewhere, but haven't worked out where yet! Gee travelling is interesting :-/
Okay... The weather here has been not too nice. It was a little cloudy in Salzburg the day I left, and I was able to make it up the steps to see the castle-fortressy-thing... I wanted to get photos of the mountain, from the castle since I alredy had photos of the castle from the mountain! So after doing that I went and grabbed a train.
Ohhh! I met Jamila in the evening after the last update. She's a lawyer! I seem to meet a lot of travelling lawyers... I think I studied in the wrong field! She's from Azerbaijan... which was pretty interesting! I imagine it'd be an adventurous place to visit! She made me walk in this big circle... I was just wandering, as I usually do, and had done about 3 laps of the old town (yes, even after climbing the mountain!), and on my way home, I met Jamila going away from the old town, which is what she was looking for! Haha... there's a comment here about women and maps!!
OK... I only have 19 mins left... about Munich
There's TONS of beer halls... and really nice ppl. John and Bridget just left thismorning for Fussen (where the walt disney castle is! It would be great to see but hrmmm not sure how I'll fit it in!). They're siblings from Winnipeg, and still have a month or so to travel. Bridget taught English in Japan (JET!)... There seems to be tons of ppl who have done that! John came on this beer tour with me last night... umm more about that in a sec.
The first night I was here there was a live band performing in this nightclub in a hotel. They were really good! It took quite a while before other ppl turned up to join me, but after Vienna I've basically decided that I'll go out on my own if I want to! It was more fun when others turned up though.
So I basically have walked around this city... the church was nice, and I took a photo of this really bizarre picture-frame-thing... like a big wooden sculpured frame around this picture in the church. There was this skull down the bottom, and this carved guy who looked *really* bored!!! Seemed strange to be in the church!
OK... Then I went to Hofbrau Haus... this kewl beer hall. The food was good! Going back there with others tonight.
Next I went to the Deutches(sp?) museum. It's this science and technology museum that was really kewl.... welll I liked it. I think I'm interested in too many things... other ppl I've spoken to have been pretty bored! I took waaay too long looking at the boat and ship part... and left not enough time to look at other stuff! But with over 13km of corridors it's impossible to see everything!
Some really kewl stuff... They had a technical toys exhibit! Like... all the construction blocks... only a little bit about lego... but they had meccano and fischer-technic! You should've seen some of the fischer stuff benny... they had a car wash, and a big craney thing.... haha brought me right back to when we used to build stuff with our set at home! I also saw some really interesting musical instruments... there was an automatic piano machine, that plays 3 real violins! (as well as the piano!) so that was kewl. and then as I was walking out there were some really good holograms... with this book, and some glasses layering it and the lens effects what you read! Which I'd seen before, but not that good.... also a microscope that you walk up to and you can see what is being magnified!
OK... I stayed till closing time, then went on this big beer tour. Umm... it was fun, and I haven't drank that much for at least 5 years! We got back safely, and I remember most of the night, I'm still just confused about how we managed to fill up the time between 8:30 and 5am! Thismorning I had a slow start and walked to a really nice english garden with some friends.
OK... I'm even thinking I might go really north soon! Like to finland or something! So who knows where my next entry will be from!
Take care & cya!
Posted by Sam at October 20, 2002 01:51 AMhello sam!
i was in munich 2 years ago, drank a lot of beer and visited the museum as well. it was a really good time there. its no wonder that you didnt have time to see it all because it is too big to see all things there. is there still octoberfest, if yes, you are lucky and have fun drinking beer and enjoy all rollercosters. dont go to finnland, becouse it is getting colder and colder there. go to the disney's castle, its worth it, i was there, really cool!
now i am with jola in bielsko and we're having fun singing karaoke!!! you know what it means, but jola is a natural born singer. especially when britney spears is on...
have fun and take care.

Good to see you're still having a good time! watch out for that beer - it can catch you by surprise.
I reckon you should go north before it gets too cold unless you plan on being able to go back in spring/summer next year. However, I do have to bow to the judgement of Tomek who is obviously a lot more experienced in European conditions than me (15 degrees in Perth in the middle of winter and it's bloody cold!)
Have fun, stay warm and cheers.

Posted by: Dad on October 20, 2002 07:58 PMHey Sam,
it's getting chilly here in Canada too. Depending on what the weather's like, you may want to consider Finland. Here, it's about 6 degrees during the day and just below 0 at night so not too bad. Wrap up in a good sweater with your yellow jacket and you should be fine. If you're going to go, go now, or go in or after March/April, especially if their weather is anything like ours!
thanks for the great details of your trip. I'm so jealous!

Posted by: Kate on October 21, 2002 08:06 PMHey sam,
I'm an Aussie traveller in Scotland at the moment, I am leaving the UK in September and was wanting to go to Munich for the Octoberfest and was wondering if you know of anyone who has managed to get work there setting up for it, working in beer halls etc. I could do with extra money and working in the festival would be cool. I just need to know how to go about it.
